Read More..IMO CARES is an IMO implemented project funded by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Focused on technology solutions for domestic shipping (under 5,000 GT) and ports.
Champions the accelerated adoption of green maritime technologies in developing countries, especially Small Island Developing States and Least Developed Countries.
The Project is part of broader IMO initiatives to decarbonize shipping and to ensure that no country is left behind on this voyage
The Issue
Shipping accounts for approximately 4% of global GHG emissions and is growing as a proportion of global emissions.
Approximately 30% of GHG emissions from shipping stems from domestic shipping (under 5,000 gt).
Decarbonizing domestic shipping is crucial to achieving the objectives set out in IMO’s GHG strategy.
Through promoting the uptake of energy efficient technologies in the maritime sectors of developing countries, we aim to accelerate the transition to zero carbon shipping
The Project
The IMO CARES project aims to advance global efforts in reducing shipping emissions by promoting technology focused partnerships, collaboration, demonstration of technologies and knowledge sharing between the global north and south.
This initiative is dedicated to supporting developing nations to achieve the IMO energy efficiency and GHG reduction targets. The main focus is on small island states and least developed countries.
By facilitating collaboration among stakeholders, IMO CARES seeks to accelerate the adoption of energy-efficient technologies, fostering a greener and more sustainable maritime industry.
The Maritime Technology Global Challenge
The mission behind our Maritime Technology Global Challenge is clear: to expedite the adoption of green technology in developing countries, with a special focus on small island developing states and least developed countries. By bringing together providers and recipient countries, we aim to facilitate sustainable change and support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime sector.
Technology providers from across the globe submitted decarbonization solutions geared toward ports and domestic vessels in Africa and the Caribbean – and we have chosen some winners.
These winners have received funding to create technical proposals for implementation of their solutions. They will also receive guidance from the local countries, MTCCs and other experts.
The Maritime Technology Global Challenge sets the stage for proven technologies to be used in pilot projects in the region, which will build confidence.
